InsyaAllah...

Rafflesia..

This is very interesting news that i read through newspaper online which is can be published into my blog page. I just copy this newspaper article written by Rizal Solmon without revise at all for information. Everybody can got it through this url which is : http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/NST/articles/20090721192917/Article/index_html

Cover Story: Ensnared by the Rafflesia2009/07/21

RIZAL SOLOMON

Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Abdul Latiff Mohamad has a deep passion for the parasitic flower and our rich biodiversity, writes RIZAL SOLOMON.

Rafflesia is a parasite without stem and leaves, hence it depends on its host for nutrients.
THERE is a strange beauty to the Rafflesia that has made it one of the more iconic symbols of Malaysia’s rich natural heritage.

The Rafflesia’s biology is as interesting as it looks. The flower is said to smell like rotting meat, a gift it uses to attract insects which transport pollen from male to female flowers.

That itself is an interesting feature that a lot of us forget, that there are male and female Rafflesia.

The strange and wonderful Rafflesia has definitely ensnared Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Abdul Latiff Mohamad, one of Malaysia’s leading experts.

Abdul Latiff is something of an icon himself, a walking encyclopaedia of knowledge on Malaysia’s biodiversity and one of the architects of Malaysia’s Natural Biodiversity Policy.

In 2003, he, along with naturalist Mathew Wong, helped identify a new species of Rafflesia found in Temenggor Forest Reserve, Perak.
“We decided to name it Rafflesia azlanii, in honour of Sultan Azlan Shah of Perak, who was the patron of the Heritage Expedition to Ulu Perak then,” says Abdul Latiff.

He was also the biologist who identified a Sumatran Species found in the Belum Forest, Perak.
Born in Kota Baru, Kelantan, the 61-year-old Abdul Latiff says he became interested in the Rafflesia “because it grows on the stem of Tetrastigma, a member of the vine family Vitaceae, which I happened to study in great detail.”
He adds that nobody introduced him to the issues of conservation of Raffesia. “It came naturally when we did research on them.”
His concern for our natural heritage encompasses everything we have in our rich rainforests. It’s an uphill battle to educate Malaysians about it. After all, how many have even heard of the Natural Biodiversity Policy and that has been around for more than 10 years.

Based at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, his office is what you would expect of any professor’s office — stacks of books and files surround him and his desk.

His work space is filled with pictures of his grandchildren which he proudly shows off.
Walking into his office, he instantly puts you at ease with his broad smile. He comes across like a favourite uncle as he begins talking passionately about our rich biodiversity.

“Rafflesia is the biggest flower on earth, there is no question about it. It is a parasite without stem and leaves, hence it depends on its host for nutrients.

“Unlike an ordinary or typical flower, it lacks the obvious features such as flower stalk, sepal, petals, even its ovary is well-hidden under the column.

“The anthers are so tiny, yet they have additional accessories such as ramenta and processes whose functions are still unclear,” he says.

The Rafflesia is an indigenous species of Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand. Abdul Latiff begins listing down the various species.

“So far as it is known, species are only found in Southern Thailand, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia (Sumatera, Java, Kalimantan) and the Philippines.”
“Altogether there are 26 species now recognised, and probably there are a few more undiscovered. In Malaysia we have four in Peninsular Malaysia which are R. cantleyi, R. kerri, R. azlanii. R sumeiae. Three in Sabah which are R. pricei, R. keithii, R. tengku-adlinii. In Sarawak, we have four species which are R. pricei, R. keithii, T. tuan-mudae and R. hasseltii,” he explains.

Rafflesia is listed as ‘threatened’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)-World Conservation Union.

He elaborates that three species — R. ciliata, R. witkampii and R. borneensis — are believed to be extinct. And R. scharbergiana in Mindanao has not been seen in the last 50 years.”

Rafflesia is accorded full protection in Sabah and Sarawak but remains unprotected in Peninsular Malaysia because the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 covers animals, birds and insects but not plants.

“This is the weakness in our Act. We were not far-sighted with regards to the protection of our own species,” says Abdul Latiff.

All is not lost, though. He explains that there are several successful Rafflesia conservation projects in Malaysia. The Rafflesia Conservation Incentive Scheme initiated in 1994 at Poring and Ranau — at the fringes of Kinabalu Park provides income for the local community.
Similarly, in Peninsular Malaysia, there are three sites at Bukit Tacing recreational forest in Benta, Kuala Lipis, Pahang that provides income for the people of Kampung Jerangsang who are entrusted to watch over the site and keep it open only to visitors.

Abdul Latiff is all for this model for Rafflesia conservation.

“This is the most practical way. Of course in situ conservation is happening in all protected forests. The examples mentioned above are testimonies to the participation of local communities in conservation. It is practical and cheap and it brings small income to the custodians.”
Most recently, the Malaysian Nature Society of Malaysia, with the assistance from the government, launched an initiative to conserve Rafflesia through the involvement of people from the Semai Orang Asli settlement at an area next to Kampung Ulu Geroh, 12km away from an old mining town in Perak. As far as he knows, it is very successful.

Dr Abdul Latiff says several Rafflesia conservation projects are on-going in the country.

“I hope more similar initiatives can be repeated elsewhere, especially in Kelantan, Pahang and Terengganu where many populations are still present.”
The conversation then shifts to the National Biodiversity Policy.

“I was one of the active members in that committee. And now I’m one of the most vocal critics of that policy.”
He adds that: “The policy is not law. It is a guide.”
The National Biodiversity Policy was launched in 1998 by the former minister, Natural Resources and Environment Tan Sri Law Heng Dieng.
When asked for his advice on how to fully utilise the National Biodiversity Policy, his answer was simple.

“All Federal policy must be adopted by the states. Once adopted, the state can set up a secretariat to operationalise via a state advisory and technical committees. There should be a Biodiversity Research Institute in every state.”
“If there is, for example, an Institute of Biodiversity and Biotechnology in each state staffed with scientists ... not bureaucrats but scientists, then the said Institute can really speed ahead and work together with the existing universities in the state.”

Antara Dua Kasih.

Antara Dua Kasih
Album : Satu Tekad
Munsyid : Unic
http://liriknasyid.com

Deru ombak pecah berderai
Mengulang pantai datang dan pergi
Begitu kasih insan diibaratkan
Bagai ombak merubah pantai

Tika kasih melestarikan sayang
Semuanya indah dipandang mata
Pabila rasa benci terbit di hati
Rasa kasih dan sayang pun menyisih

Tanda kasih yang abadi
Dalam senang jua dalam kesempitan
Kasih Ilahi tiada bersempadan
Tak memilih siapa tidak berakhir
Kekal selamanya

Di antara dua kasih
Di maqamnya yang berbeza
Mudah dijumpa namun sukar untuk diperlihara
Lahir dari ketulusan jiwa bersuluhkan iman
Namun nafsu menodainya

Terkadang kasih kita sesama insan
Bisa mengundang keredhan Tuhan
jika insan menghargainya
Dan memuliakannya

Kasih sayang Allah kekal selamanya
Kasih manusia hanya sementara

Deru ombak pecah berderai
Mengulang pantai datang dan pergi
Begitu kasih insan diibaratkan
Bagai ombak merubah pantai

Library..on saturday.

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim..

Today, with a cooperation by my housemate we've together completing our own balance of fasting in order ramadhan will be coming soon.

The ramadhan surroundings and environment can be feel through our way. At the early in the morning around 5.00 a.m one of us will wake up and try to wake up other friends. With the cooperation we prepare the "sahur meal" together. This positive elements of team work will be doing on the break the fast at the evening at "maghrib".

This is one of the happening+expensive surroundings around our house which is will be missed about half year. Two of them will be graduated and left with their own life+married. This is very expensive experience and memory into my studying journey.

During this time, I'm not doing my study or read anything, instead i post my blog.

In addition, saturday i try to take a good mood to study and find a good resources in the main library with my housemate, especially she'll doing their thesis material and resources collected. Beside that i'll learn something from her. Thanks to Mimi. What so nice!.. I know it's hard for me to do that because i'm not full time students, but it's one of the best way from several which is can be inculcate from now.

I don't know why i have no mood to study late 2 to 3 days in the fisrt week of sem3. Mb, it's the usual flu among us before the class on next week. However, i need to + should to manage my plan properly.Caiyok!!..Go Aini!!Go!!..

Father's Day is over..

Father’s day will be coming soon. As my whole time I spent at my village, I have time to celebrate with my father. However, it’s just with a moderate cook for him with his favorite meals including “masak lemak cili padi and masak asam pedas” which is so delicious with my cook.. Huhu..the reality is that’s his reason, I’m not praise of myself.

That’s no words to describe how so big his sacrifices and supporting as father since I was child.

Especially for this Jun Father’s Day, I would like to wish a Million Thank You and big love for everything that he was provided with a moderate lifestyle and right guidelines. I agree that I’m not perfect as human being and still improved myself according to the matured processes. Therefore, sorry a lot for the mistaken that for sure I have done previously.

I have learned a lot whether directly or indirectly from you, dad. I agreed that you was tried to become a good father as you can.
For all the method and good thing that learned from you I’ll inculcate for the next generation future. Thus, for the negative elements that I can identify I’ll forget it and take it as a normal thing and challenging in this developed country and life. However I’ll try to be a good daughter and person in the future! Happy Father’s Day!

Result is the journey,not destination.

10:47p.m 17 Jun 2009.

Just a while I was received a short messaging system from my friend which is informed about the last examination result. This is because I can’t surf the internet at this moments. Alhamdulillah, Thanks GOD. Every negative and bad thought previous was changing become neutral. The gloomy face and nervous heart feeling was stop and bring a smile and peaceful. Everything was alright and has answered for my waiting by this week. That is because all the examination was judged and got the result now. The only thing that we must care a lot is whether it’s improved and increased or decreased.

For me, I’m not expecting for very excellent result according to the weak performance and not well in health during the previous semester. Moreover, to be frank, I’m not a brilliant thinker or learner but at least I try to be a good listener as long as I can catch it up and practice it. At the earlier, I just pray for pass with a good pointer as well in order to increase my collection point. However, at the end of the day, I got an answer for my waiting that meaning of my result which is can make me smile and appreciated it. Personally it’s bring a new strengthen for myself for doing the best and more effort for the next episode which means next semester. This result is like a star and candle that will bring a light for my way in this journey.

Meanwhile, million thanks for all my lecturers for their lecture, guide, method and moral support directly or indirectly. Instead for fellow friend, who always give a full cooperation and commitment which is help each other, they also appreciated.
The only thing that I must care and remember that every result or A is not the destination. It’s only a starting for the challenging time and first step for the long journey. Everybody especially me need to improved in order to get a maximum potential in the next episode for everybody’s life. The most important thing is the quality, even though the quantity is also need to be care. Without the two elements it’s only a grade or theory with no action and application.

Moreover, education is the essential elements for us to being prepared for the success life in the future. This is including to get a comfortable life, prepared an accredited knowledge, get a satisfaction, expressed a hidden potential, and many more that different reason for different kind of people for sure. For the next semester, I have set my mission and pray for GOD’s blessing to turn my dream into a reality! I have to improved with a smart way for brilliant thinking will be and exploit my potential as well in order to get a satisfaction result!..
